Well, since this is the 1st good search hit for "sketchup"... I drew this up. Now I just have to build it. Only problem is... it's a 14' wide gate with a steel frame. It's going to be a decent bit of work. Also, I'm not even sure where to find some 8"x8" swaged hinges with a 500lb capacity.

What, are you channeling JC? Actually, I don't really know how heavy the gate will be. 500 just seemed like a good round number. I found a bunch of weld-on gate hinges online... but none of them allow me to open the gate past 90deg outwards. I need a more traditional swaged hinge, like you'd use on a regular door in your house, but just massively super-sized. Or I need to redesign the gate with some big exposed metal bars to hinge off of, which I'd like to avoid because I want the gate to blend into the rest of the fence.

A friend recently built a couple big-ass gates and I think he made his own hinges with grease fittings. They looked pretty trick when done, for sure. I'll ping him and ask.

My dad might actually have some hinges that he would sell. I will look when I go over there.

Cool, thanks guys! Like I said, I did find some pretty affordable weld-on gate hinges. They just won't allow the gate to open out and swing around flat against the fence. They all look to open only 90deg outwards, unless I do something crazy with the way hinges are mounted. Here's really what I'm going for, as it allows the metal frame to be on the inside of the gate welded to the hinges, the planking on the outside and flush with the posts, and the gate can open out 180 deg.

I *finally* finished up that gate/trailer parking area (well, aside from painting) last weekend. The gate itself was done weeks ago... then I finally got around to tearing down the old fence and moving the panels to the new posts... then another delay before the landscapers came out and put in the gravel and railroad ties. Then my dumb dog decides he likes to rub his head in the railroad tie tar, so I had to put in *another* smaller picket fence to partition out the trailer area from the rest of the yard. But hey, all I have to do now is paint it! *sigh* But the gate design in SketchUp was invaluable. No issues building the thing... it went together exactly as planned. The only problem is that the posts sagged a little bit after all that rain, so it's a tight fit when they're shut. Oh well, it's not like the gate gets opened and closed a lot.

Thanks guys. It came out pretty damn good. The landscapers did a fantastic job leveling the area and setting the ties down. It could probably use a little more gravel, but it's got decent coverage for now, and it's not like I move the trailer a lot. I tried to make the parking spot big enough for my 18' trailer (it's actually 22' long including the hitch), plus a 15' car... but I think I'm about 1 or 2 feet short. Maybe with some creative angling of the trailer it'd work. Making the spot any longer would have resulted in being too close to the house for the walkway to the new man-gate that I put in to the front yard. Ultimately, I'd like a 24' enclosed trailer. There's really about 33'-44' of space, depending on how much of the angled gate area you can squeeze into, so anything I'm ever going to have should fit easily. I just figured if I'm going through all the effort to put this in, I should make it as large as practical for the space I've got, since it's eventually a selling point for the house to anyone with a big camper, toy hauler, boat, or something.

Sorry, I neglected to mention, looks frickin awesome! I have extremely similar plans for a 14' fence for access to my backyard. The gate in place is a piece of sh*t, and will be relocated to be a gate for a backyard dividing fence. (we will be building a garage in the backyard, and renting the house out, limiting renters to half the backyard, and locked out of the area with the garage. I'll be zeroscaping the renter's half, and have been looking for what I now know is called "decomposed granite ) |

Give me a year or so to know how much will be left over after we build a shed next summer. The left over is yours if you want to come haul it away.
