Default Hey Eric... remember this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KodJ6ThPHy0

(I'm slowly but surely pulling all the in-car footage from that weekend off the tape... it's 3 hours long, this clip is from the 1st 90 minutes.)

Shifting mid corner will do that to you, especially if you are aren't looking where you are going.

You did the same thing in turn 2, just didn't spin.

And stop shuffle steering!

I know, this was a while back, but still fun to give you crap.

Turn 1's not even in the video. And I'm not sure if he's shifting or just thinking about shifting with his hands... I know I reach for the knob occasionally, then decide I have enough revs left to wait longer.

I meant 2. You can hear the engine tone change just before the spin.

I figured that was 'cause of the traction loss on the curb. Same thing happens on the exit of 2. Those curbs were really slippy on the old tires we were running that day.

I dunno, there's no real reason to shift there... I don't know why Eric would be grabbing a gear.

Edit: after looking again... it looks like he goes 4->3, but I think he hesitates... then he does make the downshift late. Not sure if that causes the spin, since I would think he's off the clutch before the curb, but I'm sure it didn't help to upset the car right before the apex.

I thought it'd be entertaining to see some video from a few years back. I didn't think it'd turn into a driving lesson and argument. But I guess that's just how things are around here these days.

Which is sad. I was just watching the video from the road trip Matt and I made to ESX back in '04. It reminded me about how the whole Subaru community (and SECCS) used to be. I miss the good old days when WRX's weren't the ricer car of choice (though by '04 the tide was already shifted). I actually enjoyed working on my car, and bullshitting about 'em, everything hadn't been tried before, 200awhp was a lot, etc. What's happened? This shit used to be so much fun... now it's just a perpetual flame war... and granted, I'm part of the problem, but it's not just me... the whole "scene" has changed.

Also, on that ESX video... Matt and I ran into Franz and his family randomly at a gas station in Mohave on the way back... That was kinda hard to watch, I totally forgot that happened.

I'd love to edit that video down to a manageable size and post it too, but I get the feeling it'll just be an argument about intakes and ESX's tuning philosophy.

Sorry. It was supposed to be funny sort of, not a driving lesson so much, but I think I failed, or you and I are so used to getting into it that we both just kinda did...

I hereby promise not to rag on any ESX video posted at least from a tuning philosophy perspective.

And I replace my original comments with a caption...

"Doh, maybe I didn't need a shift there..."

Better? Or should I just stick with "Doh!"?

In reply to Scott's post, I must say that we *all* are to blame to some degree, for the "flame war" that takes place from time to time, but we must at least deep down inside, still enjoy this crap! I know that if I didn't have some love somewhere inside of me for tuning/wrenching/talking about/driving cars, I sure as hell wouldn't do crap like work here from 7-4:30, then go over to Jeremy's house and put a cylinder head on an MR2, then get back up at 8 the next day and come back to Nissan on my day off to align Emily and Jonny's cars...

I may only speak for myself, but if I didn't have a place to come and BS with my "car buddies" (seccs) and the spare time to wrench on cars and make them f4$torz, I'd go crazy!

I think I'm just jaded 'cause it all seems to have been done before. Back in '02, this shit was all brand new, and there were no experts (at least not in the US) on these cars, and the cars were unknown to your basic d-bag Fast and Furious fanatic.

Now we've got more aftermarket than the Honda Civic, and more ricers than ever... Seriously, when was the last time anyone saw a cool WRX? Sure there are some sweet STi's and RS's running around that are owned by real enthusiasts, and the smallest handful of WRX owners, but the WRX has become the ricer car of choice... they've all got MBC, BOV, Carbon Hood, lowering springs, and some punk-ass kid behind the wheel. And these guys are the vast majority of "Subaru Enthusiasts" today.

It sucks to get lumped in with these tool-boxes that run up our insurance rates, give us headaches at stoplights, and make the cops look twice. It's just a lot easier to wail on n00bs with the attitude of either they roll with the punches and "get it", or they can go fuck-off and blow up their car with their untuned MBC. In a way, the hazing means those that make it, have earned it. Which, in a twisted way, I support. But what it also means is that the whole scene has a negative vibe to it. All that negativity is detrimental to the fun level of the club in general. Meets used to be about checking out each other's cars, and bullshitting about what's next. Now meets are about shrugging off each others cars 'cause "we've all seen it before" and bullshitting about some retard doing something retarded we saw last week.

I guess I'm just being nostalgic about the past, and wishing things were as they were... but I'm not sure that's even possible, simply because by and large, the people attracted to these cars are *not* the same people that used to be drawn to Subarus. And I'm not speaking in particular to any of our newer members, as the people in the club today are those that have put up with the hazing and are people I consider "enthusiasts" not "fanbois"... I'm talking about the street racer types that join the board to talk shit, or sell their car from TX, etc.

So, have we become Corner Carvers? I don't think so. Heck, I'm not even the really old guard like you and JC at least as far as Subarus go, but I have wrenched on things since the 80s..

But the WRX did not invent handling, power, tuning, etc., it only introduced a new stage for the play to be performed on and brought some new and old performers to that stage.

I would also challenge that you are not the same person. Your level of expertise and skill have grown by leaps, bounds, and an engine or three! You are no longer the wide eyed young Noob of old days yourself. Instead, you are the seasoned veteran who must now pass on that knowledge to those who come to the mountain and prostrate themselves before you.

You must now judge who is and isn't worthy...

So you have a choice. Become the jaded noob crushing egotist that exists in some corners of the web, someone who helps lead the floundering but moderately well behaved ones to teh light, or you can take your roller bearings and go play by yourself.

Next thing you know, some new autocrosser who mounts a camera and posts some video and you will you find yourself commenting on their line, braking and hands and hoping it is received with the same positive intent that it was given with and not taken as criticism.

IMHO opinion, giving back to those who come after you is what this hobby/sport is all about.

I'm not disagreeing with you... I'm just saying that it's hard to find those I'd like to give back to amongst the throngs of rejects that wouldn't listen if I dropped a solid-gold turd of knowledge on them.

Plus, I don't feel like I've learned a ton of information over the years... it's just the stuff a 1 minute search on NASIOC would turn up if you bother to click the button.

It is not the search that takes time, it is the digesting and interpretation of the information found in the search. All that time you have spent reading and learning and can now translate and interpret for the noobs and point them to it for further enlightenment... You will get a real satisfaction eventually typing the 5 letters: RTFRB after a quick and snotty response to a noob question.

Sarcasm aside... 99% of the stuff I've learned about these cars has been a combination of reading it somewhere and/or trying it myself. That's why it's frustrating to perpetually answer the same 15 questions over and over... the knowledge is out there, and if you go after it yourself you'll understand it better than if you just want to get force-fed the answers. And if you're posting the same old questions just to participate... just post some funny pictures in OT or something instead.

I know how you feel. I'd like to think that I know more about my car then most other subaru owners but, I am still a total newb. At times I too get frustrated at the same questions over and over and over. I like to learn on my own and work on my own car unless its something that I absolutely can't do myself. I search nasioc all day long but, its totally awesome to have you guys just a post or phone call away.

Thanks

anytime an argument arises, my funny pictures will be there.

It might be useful to have a sticky thread in tech chat that explained all the typical performance mods for Subarus, to cut down on all the "What springs should I install??" kind of threads.

+1... it seems like a lot of wasted work to organize and catalog the info here when NASIOC has all of it x1000. We're really not much of a tech resource, except when it comes to some of the racing stuff, and local info of course.
