Well it was a great weekend overall. Not nearly as many mechanical problems as last time and most of the tunes went very smoothly. One thing I learned as I tuned more and more small turbo cars at elevation is that you can really make some crazy torque up there! Significantly more it seems than down at sea level. Here are the charts:

Here's the last tune I did on Monday on my way back. This car is near Truckee so I stopped by on the way home and tuned it on some nice roads near their place. This was a very mild and interesting setup. Its an 02 WRX with a stock downpipe with gutted out cat, stock third cat in place (not gutted), stock catback, STI uppipe, P&P headers, P&P TD04, P&P throttle body, samco inlet hose, perrin maf pipe, and prodrive 3-port boost solenoid. This car was running out of fuel up top, so I had to keep it somewhat conservative above 5500RPM until the customer upgrades to a walbro. Nonetheless, considering the nearly stock TBE this car made great overall power and completely insane amounts of torque . At sea level I would have expected this car to make about 205whp and 210-215ft-lbs at most. Instead this thing put down a whopping 231ft-lbs with a curve that almost looks like a 2.5l Here's the plot:

And here's another TD04 car but this one is an 07 WRX with a 2.5l... needless to say its a torque monster. This car has a Cobb catted downpipe, Tanabe catback, USDM STI TMIC, and Hallman MBC.

Again, tons of torque, but its obvious the tiny turbo is having a hard time keeping up top. Thankfully this customer is upgrading to a VF34 in the near future. Here's the plot:

This is an 06 WRX that I tuned on my last trip. We had some issues with fueling inconsistencies due to his intake and leaky BOV, so we went very conservative on the last tune. This time the customer switched back to the stock airbox and stock BOV. With very consistent fueling, we were able to safely extract an additional 11whp and 23ft-lbs! This car has a TD05-18g with 7cm housing, STI TMIC, ScoobySport downpipe, 1 step colder plugs, walbro, and Hallman MBC. Here's his new plot:

And here's his old plot for comparison:

You can really see how the car now not only has more mid range torque, but also pulls much better all the way to redline. Its always nice when you can actually get more power by switching to stock parts .

This is another 02 WRX with a basic VF34 setup:

VF34
STI Pink injectors
Walbro
USDM STI TMIC
Perrin catless DP
Apex Catback
Hallman MBC

Keep in mind this is an 02 WRX with 80k miles on it and the customer requested a fairly conservative tune. At sea level this sort of setup normally makes about 270whp and 240-250ft-lbs. So while its evident that the elevation hurts top end flow a bit, this car again shows that its possible to extract significantly more mid range torque than at sea level with the same octane fuel.

Here's the road dyno plot on 91 Octane:

The car felt surprisingly torquey for a 2.0 and I almost never see a 2.0 with VF series turbo make more torque than horsepower on 91 Octane. I kept asking the customer if he had headers but we confirmed that the headers were indeed stock.

And now on to the big boys...

This is an 06 WRX with:

built block with CP forged pistons, cosworth bearings, arp head studs
tdo6 20g with 8cm housing
aps tmic
aps 70mm intake
aps inlet
tgv deletes
OBX equal length headers,
injen dowpipe wrapped
intake manifold spacers
Skunk2 exhaust
NX intercooler sprayer
07 sti 6 speed tranny

This car had some wiring issues causing false knock readings at low load and low rpm only after the clutch was engaged. Later the car threw a couple codes that were also wiring related so we ended the tune early and decided to hold off on the C16 tune until the issues were resolved. We also discovered the car still has 650cc injectors which ended up being maxxed out on the 91 tune. The customer is going to fix the wiring and get some 750's for next time. That being said, at WOT the car had absolutely no issues and made awesome power on 91 Octane. Here's the 91 octane plot:

Something to note here is that this is the first built engine I have ever seen that sounded just like a stock block! No piston slap, no loud diesel-like noises, etc. It just ran smoothly and you would never guess that it has forged pistons. Props go out to AIMS machine shop for assembling a great motor.

And last but not least, another FP Green car. I tuned this car previously as well but the setup was far from ideal. This car had been set up and tuned by another shop and with the setup as it was we couldn't get much out of it. With a couple key changes to the setup, its now an absolute beast. Here's the mod list as it is now:

wbr fmic with blow through maf
fp green 8cm 2.4 inlet
bpm turbo inlet hose
pe 850cc injectors
worx bov
walbro 255 fuel pump
helix downpipe
tanabe catback
sbr uppipe and dump tube with tial 38mm EWG

And here are the plots:
91 Octane @ 20psi:

and 109 Octane @ 25-26psi:

I really love this turbo . Great compromise between response and all out power. I also love seeing these cars fall in place when the right parts are carefully picked for the application.

One final thing to note is that it was very cold in Reno this past weekend so all the cars were definately making above average power. The FP Green and 20G cars for instance would likely make about 10whp less on a 75-80F day.

And again, big thanks to everyone for coming out and hanging out in the cold! And of course big thanks to Cory and Jason for taking the initiative and arranging these trips. It looks like I'll be coming back in about 1 month as Cory already lined up more than enough cars for another weekend

Thanks
-- Ed

These were my results from today. GST motorsports in Hayward. I think it was about 85 ambient. Wish I could get a tune for up here though. Im losing 4 psi across the board compared to sea level. 91 octane.

wow those are amazing numbers for 91 Octane. What's your setup? Any water injection?

Thanks the dyno reads super low from what Mike says. I wonder what it would put down on a dynapack.

Right... the Mustang dyno reads relatively low compared to Dynojets and Dynapaks. My road dyno software reads very similarly to the Mustangs when no corrections are used.

What's your setup? Is this a GT35R?

Good looking stuff Ed.

If anybody wants to claim those dyno charts, post the info in the Dyno thread and I will update it.

still waiting on the setup ....

Maybe next time I'm up you'd like to see what your car puts down up at elevation.

Yeah have Ed tune it. You don't even have to wake up early!

thanks guys.

its not rotated. not even a big turbo. its the direct competition to the green. i didnt want to go fp and it was a gift from my GF. so price wasnt a huge obstacle. the only reason i mentioned the mustang reading low isnt cause its a mustang. everyone knows they read low. but this particular one reads even lower.

for instance the esx time attack car 05 face puts down barely 450 on his dyno, whereas across the bay its putting down 500+ all day.

an fp green with c16 made almost the same power as me. we were very close, except mine spools about 400 rpm lower. id love to come out tonight. dunno though. after everything thats happened i feel really bad about past situations and dont want to start drama by showing up.

I'm guessing that this has to be a GT52, right? Or maybe a 7cm2 red?

What drama? Did I miss something or is my mind really starting to fade? I always remember Phill be helpful and offering a hand to me several times back when he worked for the good guys.

I'm guessing the GT52 since he said that price was not an issue. Some guy on Nasioc is putting down 510whp on C16 with one.

Let us know if you are going to make it out to the meet. That turbo is on the top of my list and I would love to check it out.

Did you end up with the v-mount intercooler or did you go with a front mount?
