At last a reasonable solution to a long-deficient niche.
I had previously bought my sister (field nurse in the Sudan) a Sony Vaio 11" for general use. That is an awesome machine, but a bit expensive and fragile for outdoor living. I just got this ASUS Eee PC 901 10" with the SSD and 7+hr battery running XP! For the money, it really is the best student/general purpose solution. Sure, the keyboard is tiny, and the screen is tiny, but for casual surf and portable data entry it is great. At the same price point as the cheapest non-refurbished laptops, ASUS has a winner here. My sis will be lucky if I stuff it in a box and send it, it's addicting.

Nice. Yah, having a CD/DVD drive is becoming less and less important. These are pretty cool. I wonder how cheap they'll be in a couple more years. If they get down to a couple hundred bucks and more HDD space, we might see them everywhere.
