Deal, did somebody say Deal? Oh, Dean, yeah that's me.
Default Sept 12-13 Cheap Track days at Reno-Fernley Raceway. Drivers & Volunteers wanted!!!

Reno Region SCCA is hosting 2-day track event at Reno-Fernley Raceway September 12 & 13!

Come out and drive, or if you like to watch and want to help out, volunteer, and you can go out on a corner station with an experienced worker and watch/learn up close!

$175/day or both for $250!!! That is a great deal. You will pay that for 1 day with many groups. You can expect at least 1:30 minutes of track time per day!!!

PDX (Performance Driving eXperience) is most likely what you want to sign up for...

This is for street cars and all drivers wanting to learn/improve car control skills in the relatively safe environment of a track. Passing is controlled, and instructors are provided.

More info and online registration is at www.renoscca.motorsportsreg.com

I'm the chief instructor, so if you have any questions, fire away...

Usually at least four 20 minute sessions each day. Or about 3 seasons of autocross seat time for the weekend.

Dean, I'm currently planning on instructing. Should I have received something from SCCA regarding my instructors license, 'cause I haven't received anything from them (including my TT license that I paid for for that matter).

Like Scott said, right now, it looks like at least 1:30 of track time for PDX groups. It may be even more.

Scott, I can't speak for the normal TT license, but your Instructor license paperwork got signed, scanned and emailed tonight. (don't ask) Even if it doesn't arrive, you are covered and we want you!

Bump... just a few days to go.

This should be a great event with lots of track time and a great deal $ wise... 2 days for only $250!!! $175 for 1 day is darn good as well.

While you can just show up, it makes it much easier for the organizers if you sign up on-line beforehand.

So, go sign up... NOW!

You missed a great day, but there is one more tomorrow...

The PDX group got 4 roughly 30 minute sessions!!! 2 hours of track time for $175... You can't beat that with an OEM Subaru lug wrench.

Plenty of room left for cars and drivers tomorrow, and plenty of great instructors to sit in the right seat... I don't think you can register on-line any more, but let me know and I'll make sure they are ready for you.

Everyone but Silvio and Nat are chumps for not coming out to the track for at least one day this weekend. We had 6 PDXers on Sat and 4 PDXers on Sunday. Basically, if you came out, you basically had the whole track to yourself.

Hell, even I got track time in my WRX this weekend.

4 Sessions of 30 min each. That less than $1.50 per min + a full tank of gas.

I filled up before 1st session at gas station close to the track in Fernley. On the way back the gas light was on. So I stop at the same gas station for another full tank.

Would it be possible to have half days of track time available. Pay half the amount for half the sessions?

That would increase participation possibly, or just make the logistics of running the event more difficult?

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this? I can take a look at scca forums and post there!

I agree with Tyson. If we can have $100 for morning or $100 for afternoon, we might get more people.

I'll be nightmare for chief instructor Dean. The problems that I can see right now are instructors assignment, schedule, another classroom in the afternoon.

What about put some ad in the paper like RGJ or Summit Racing?

Ray would have loved to get his car out there, but he already had plans to be out of town by the time he found out about the event through me.

Me - I'm a broke chump and only have one set of tires - all-season ones.

Would people really do all the car prep, drive out to Fernley and pay $100 for only two sessions for a total of 50-60 minutes of track time?

National SCCA Fees are per driver regardless of sessions, so it might well be more than $100 for 1/2 day. That is partly why the second day was only $75 for this past event. those per car fees don't count on day 2.

And maybe a $20 instructor repetition fee payable to me.

The PDX happened during a season, so they would have been perfect.

SCCA can try and see how many cheap racers willing to come out and play. But if you ask me....Hell NO, after flush the brake fluid, swap rotors & pads, adjust the alignment & put the race tires on. I want to run 2 days. But I have to spend time with family too.

The other thing to note... you're only going to wear out the car as much as you want to. You can still have tons of fun around the track w/o pushing the engine, tires, and brakes. Hitting all your markers around the track at a 70% pace is still satisfying. You don't have to be sliding around at 10/10ths with your hair on fire.

Hell, at the previous to last event, I drove the SVX for a session. Sure, the brakes sucked so bad I had to coast down all the straights to make sure I'd be able to stop when I got to the braking zone, but it was still fun and still useful to my student. In fact, I think it was more useful to bring the student out in the SVX than in the WRX because my SVX drove much more like his stock C4 Vette in terms of power and handling than the race car would have.

Point is, you can still come out and get your money's worth on your all-seasons and stock brake pads as long as you know going into the day that you're not going to be pushing hard.
