Now what?
Also, one of the same bolts on the other heads was cross-threaded... how much of a PITA is it going to be to repair that? I about to just drop this pile off at Kspeed and tell them to just call me when it's done.

Those are only like 20 FtLb bolts. How do you mess them up?
Where or who worked on this block last? I'd check to see if the bearing numbers even match. ![]()

![]() The mangled one looked fine when I went to take it off, but the wrench just slipped a little and rounded the corners. And then no matter how hard I tried to get grip, it just kept rounding off worse and worse. I tried some vice-grips and that's what really mangled it. I hope I don't have to weld a nut on it, because any splatter on the cams is going to be an expensive mess.

Have you tried one of those gator sockets? Maybe you could clean it up with a dremel cutoff wheel?

I'll try welding before cutting. If I fill the heads with metal shavings I'll have to get them tanked before I can put them back together.

That is so weird. Vans gizmo might work. If you do weld, maybe a piece of tin with a hole just for the nut would keep splatter out of everything else. Heavy foil or a disposable baking pan might work too.

And I was planning on covering up the heads with some heavy blankets or something if I ended up welding a nut on there.

Well, I tried my gripper sockets... no luck, it just popped off like a 6-sided socket.
![]() Then I welded a bolt to the top of the nut... and the bolt twisted in half and sheared off. ![]() Hammered the gripper socket over the top of the welding... that ruined the socket as it stripped. ![]() Slapped a pair of vise grips on the welding, locked them so tight I nearly broke my hand when it finally clamped down... hit it with a rubber mallet, and *finally* it came loose. Funny thing is, once the bolt cracked loose, it came out super easily. It wasn't cross-threaded or anything. ![]() Anyway, I got my motor apart, and the pistons look fine, at least aside from all the coking on 'em from running so rich. However, the #4 piston leaves a tiny line of oil on the cylinder wall when I spin the crank, so that might indicate a ring-land or bad ring I think. I'm not going to split the block, I'll let Kspeed have at it now.

If those are OE cast pistons then it is likely a busted ringland on #4. If you get the shortblock to us early this coming week we can turn it around quickly. We have 2 sets of forged pistons in stock - one for a hone-slightly-oversize and one for .25mm over.

Actually, those were a breeze this time around. 2 of 4 came loose with my impact wrench. The other 2 came loose when I went to home depot and picked up a 600 ftlb wrench to replace my cheap-o 275 ftlb wrench.
Cory, you'll be happy to know I've finally got large gauge hose on my air tank and a wrench that will break a bolt loose better than a 3/4" hand ratchet. ![]()
