Default What's with all the guests?

Seems like we've got a lot of guests today... so many in fact, that we set a new record.

Who linked to what from where?

We all linked here from our Ongiong Projects threads on i-club. that's probably 90% of it.

eh? Linking pictures won't show up as a guest on the site. You have to actually browse the message board.

Is it just me, or is there something inherently wrong with the administrator asking the members where all the links are coming from? Can't you just like, look that up with admin tools? :?

No, just pictures posted in there, in IMG tags, not even linked...weirdness.

An image tag works like a link.... the browser goes and gets the pic and inserts it, instead of opening the whole window.

Scott, is bandwidth usage up much?

Eh, kind of. On the basic level, yes that is correct. The webserver will see the people connecting, requesting the file etc..

But, for forum itself, people have to be viewing the actual page (and not logged in) to be registered as a guest.

So, a lot of people are looking at the site that aren't our regular users.

Hmmm. I don't recall ever linking to an actual thread. Maybe people are following links to our random image hosting thread? And the gallery isn't even technically part of the forum anyway right?

Bingo.

Kevin: I can't check usage from here as it requires a non-por 80 connection. However, we've got 500GB/mo... and on a busy month, we use like 7. So I'm not too worried. Hell, even the c-strike server's bandwidth didn't faze us. I think the server itself would crap out before we could kill the bandwidth.

Yeah, I remembered that we had ridiculous bandwidth, I was just curious if it was actually using more with the guests.

Random thought:
You could set up a home machine to be a tunnling proxy... use port 80 on the home machine and have it point to any port you wanted on any internet address. Granted, it would have security issues and would take some work to set up (probably even require linux), but it would mean true freedom at work.

One of the little perks of being the company network admin is that you don't have to bother with all that.

I thought of that too, but the holes I'd have to put in my home firewall would totally bork my home network... that and all inbound port 80 traffic on my home network would have to go to the Linux box which makes browsing the web at home kinda impossible on anything but that Linux box.

Plus my work connection would be limited to my home's cable upstream bandwidth.

There may be a new variant of the phpBB worm out there. That seems to have caused the # of guests to be high yesterday for several phpBB forums (including one I administer). Looks like we upgraded to phpBB 2.0.11 just in time.

Boy, talk about lucky. The only reason I upgraded the board was because I went home sick at lunch last Monday, and I figured if I was just gonna sit in bed all afternoon, I should try to get something useful done. So I busted out the laptop and got to updating.
